They can play as Reimu Hakurei the shrine maiden, as well as some of the supporting cast like Marisa Kirisame the mage, Inubashiri Momiji the white wolf tengu, Mononobe no Futo the hermit, Aya Shameimaru the crow tengu, Sanae Kochiya the modern-day shrine maiden, Flandre Scarlet the vampire and her time-manipulating maid Sakuya Izayoi. The story begins when Reimu took shelter from a heavy rain to the antique shop Kourindo. Its owner Rinnosuke Morichika becomes intoxicated with the power of the Golden Spheres and he attacks Reimu. Rinnosuke then summons replicas of the Gensokyo denizens and erects the Awaritium Tower. Reimu narrowly escapes but decides to investigate the said tower and bring back Rinnosuke from his senses.
