Modern-day hard drives include a technology known as S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology System), that allows the device to constantly check its status and, therefore, let the user know if it detects any irregularity or error.
Monitor the health of your hard drives
Smartmontools, also known as S.M.A.R.T. Monitoring Tools, that belongs to the so-called sniffers, is a collection of small utilities developed to monitor the hard drives that we have installed on our computer, with the possibility to know the status of any of these devices.
It's possible to carry out SMT tests, program the automatic hard drive monitoring or search for working errors on any of the hard drives that are connected to the computer. This tool doesn't have a graphical interface, making it necessary to perform all the tasks from a command-line terminal.
