Windows 7 has been a great inhouse zoom function. This is achieved with the following shortcut: Windows key + minus or plus sign.
Much easier is to use Aero Zoom. The zoom is transferred to your mouse. So you can hold down the left mouse button, simply spin the wheel and Aero Zoom zooms the target in and out.
