Simulation games, in one form or another, have been around for a while in the Android world. We can find almost anything; from that huge joke called Goat Simulator, to Farming Simulator, to realistic flight simulators, which test the skills, and sometimes the patience, of a great many players.
On this occasion, we’re going to take a look at X-Plane Flight Simulator, which has been around for years as a flight simulator saga for PC (since 1995, to be exact). Right off the bat, we can say that the feeling of flying a plane has been superbly transferred to mobile devices. And, of course, just like any simulator worth its salt, it is not easy to get the hang of it at all.
Main features
Full tutorials on how to fly the game’s planes.
Different points of view, ideal for the ‘photo mode’.
Realistic cabins faithfully reproduced.
Complete take-off and landing procedures.
Rescue, transport, combat and free-flying missions.
17 different types of plane.
The complete experience; but not always that easy
Something that we should make quite clear here, is that this is not a game for everyone. It has a lot going for it – the graphics are excellent, they’ve really given it a realistic feel, and the planes are reproduced down to the last millimeter. Unfortunately, however, the fact that they’ve nailed the realistic side so well also holds the game back, in a way.
Let me explain what I mean by that. The nine tutorials incorporated into the game are, in practical terms, obligatory for getting into the game. If you just jump into a free-flying session without having completed any of these ‘training’ missions, it is more than likely that you will find it extremely difficult to get the hang of the controls. Controls which, incidentally, function using the phone’s sensors and which, at least during our tests, were really difficult to use.
At the beginning, you’ll have two planes that you can use for free; but after that, you’ll have to fork out some cash if you want to unlock any of the 15 other available models. Each one costs a different amount, depending on its type, and its significance in aeronautical history.
