Choose a correct letter, and it will be marked with a blue circle and appear as part of the mystery word, so you can figure out what the word might be as you progress. Guess wrong, and the letter will be marked with a red X so you can't guess it again. Each time you choose a letter that's not in the word, another line will be added to your hangman.
