In its original version, Storm Boy was about a boy who lives on the beaches of South Australia near the mouth of the Murray River. He rescues stranded sailors and pelican chicks during a storm, and one of the chicks, later named Mr. Percival, becomes his pet and faithful companion. Mr. Percival was a real-life pelican who was cared for by Mr. Thiele, and the tale was retold in other books.
