The primary goal of these games is to improve reading skills. The focus is on the most commonly used words in English. The categories in this game are places, directions, colors, household objects, family, animals, sizes, food, feelings, weather, and body parts.The player must read and have conversations with non-player characters (NPCs) in order to progress through the game. Each conversation comes with a picture and sound dictionary to help players learn or remember words. There is also an opportunity to spell each word. In order to progress through levels, the player must listen to or spell words to earn progress points. The player must also find items and trade items to get animals for Al’s zoo. When Al has all ten animals, the game is complete.In the written books, there are short lessons covering reading comprehension, parts of speech, and grammar. It is not expected that the player becomes an expert in grammar. However, the player should have a familiarity with the basic concepts of parts of speech and sentence formation. The writing books also give the player an opportunity to practice handwriting skills.
